De RememberedIt's been two years This June marks the anniversary of the passing of one of Star Trek's greats. DeForest Kelley, as Dr. McCoy, he left an incredible impression with millions of TV viewers. As the expression of humanity in a future world, he tempered Mr. Spock's cold logic and balanced dispassionate analysis with a tender and emotional perspective. Always kind and friendly, De, as he was always called by his friends, had a very quiet and gentle manner. We really miss him. I will always remember him with his loving wife Carolyn at his side. Both were deeply interested in fans of De's work and gave liberally of their time in correspondence with them. Kristine M. Smith, who cared for the Kelley's prior to De's death, is now completing a book titled: DeForest Kelley: A Harvest of Memories. As the press release indicates, the book is an evolution of an extraordinary relationship, meticulously documented in an affectionate - and affecting - personal memoir. The author, Kristine Smith, begins at the beginning (1966), inviting her readers to vicariously tag along and share her twixt-twelve-and-twenty excitement as she casts her eyes on her favorite actor, DeForest Kelley (Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy of STAR TREK) for the first time ever: live, up-close and personal. I look forward to the book's publication and based on the excerpts I've read, anticipate with both joy and sadness at reading its tale. I will notify our readers when the book is complete. |
Suspended Animation Review Comics that have been nominated for prestigious comic book awards draw attention. Comics that have only published two issues usually do not. Herobear is very unusual. It "encapsulates everything good about comics; the escapism, the humor, the wonder, the adventure, and the very sense that the reader is right there experiencing everything with the main character, because so much of what Tyler endures is familiar to us all." Let's
Get More Votes!A few days ago I threw-out the challenge for the best science fiction phrases of all time. I've got a couple hundred suggestions - and all of them are great, but I want more. I'll be doing a mailing today to ask for submissions over the weekend. Here's a few of my favorite (if not most popular) ones. I'd actually forgotten some of these. |
OK people, let's get busy and submit a whole bunch more. Next week we'll have a run-off vote for the #1 phrase from the top-ten submitted quotes. The submission form is further down this page. |
Mark Allen admits he normally shies away from reviewing the Spandex Superheroes in his Suspended Animation reviews, however, he is always willing to make an exception when the work is as good and noteworthy as Marvel Comics' trade-paperback collection, Daredevil: Visionaries by Frank Miller.

Andromeda
Gets SpikedJames Marsters, the vampire Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, will be making a guest appearance on Andromeda this season. He will be playing Archduke Charlemange Bolivar, a snobbish and deceptive Nietzschean commander. Unlike the series' regular genetically-altered star, Tyr Anasazi (Keith Hamilton Cobb), James' Nietzschean character was bred for cunning, diplomacy and table manners. There is additional Spike and Andromeda news in the following Zap2It.com article. |
I'll

So here it is, your chance to submit your favorite science fiction phrases of all time. I'll compile the list of entries and announce the winners here. To get you started, here's Michael's list: 1. Starland
ScreeningHey, Star Trek's Grand Nagus is in this movie! Woody Allen writes, directs and stars in his latest comedy, also starring (in alphabetical order) Dan Aykroyd, Academy Award® winner Helen Hunt ("As Good As It Gets"), Brian Markinson, Wallace Shawn, David Ogden Stiers and Charlize Theron. Allen stars as CW Briggs, the top insurance investigator in New York in 1940—or so he keeps telling the firm’s new efficiency expert, Betty Ann "Fitz" Fitzgerald (Helen Hunt). Briggs prides himself on being able to crack any insurance caper by getting into the mind of the thief, but now, thanks to the hypnotic powers of the Jade Scorpion, the mind of a thief is getting into Briggs. The Starland Screening will be held Tuesday, June 19, 2001 at 2:00PM. |
Star
Wars NewsGeorge Lucas made a rare public appearance at the MTV music awards to honor Sophia Copolla for her work on The Virgin Suicides. While there, he made some comments about footage from SW:II that was leaked on the internet. Saying that leaks like that are "taking a big bite out of the film industry." The raw footage was of a blue-screen saber battle featured in the new movie. In another Star Wars / Internet matter, George is getting ready to clamp down on some people who are messing with his work. It seems a group of guys have taken the time to re-edit SW:Episode II and have called their version The Phantom Edit. Now fans are gathering at clandestine spots (and around the internet) to trade copies of the edition that minimizes Jar Jar's role in the movie and features a re-dub of the silly character to give him a more adult portrayal. I'm sure the edition will be available in convention dealer's rooms soon. To view the latest info on the story and view the G-Man's comments, take a click to Zap2it. |
Tammy Morrison sent me notice of a new site that refuses to let the Star Trek: Voyager mission end. In the fine tradition of Star Trek fanzines, you can help contribute to her project by writing new episodes for Voyager's eighth season. They are looking for 26 episodes (a full season) to feature on the site. I'm thinking they'll have plenty of stories for a decade or more before they know it. Click here to check it out... |
Boneyard
RattlesIn today's Suspended Animation review, Michael Vance finds chills with a dollop of ha-ha in Boneyard. The comic is a quarterly series that delivers its promised thrills with attention to plot and well executed illustration from cartoonist Richard Moore.

Baby
Boy ScreeningOK, I'll grant that this movie is not in the Science Fiction Genre, but Karolyn (our Shipping Manager) is a real Snoop Dogg fan - so we're having a screening! In 1991, 23 year-old director John
Singleton guided viewers through South Central Los Angeles, taking an
unflinching look at the devastating impact of violence on the black
family. Boyz N The Hood's realistic portrayal of the inner city changed
the face of black cinema forever. The Starland Screening will be held
Wednesday,
June 20, 2001 at the UA Pavilions Theater on the 16th Street Mall at
7:30pm. This movie is rated R and contains strong sexuality,
language, violence and some drug use. |
Wild
Charmer?Denise Richards is reportedly in the running to replace Shannon Doherty on the WB's Charmed TV series. Denise is perhaps best known for her part in Wild Things with Kevin Bacon, but SF fans should recognize her for her role in Starship Troopers. I've been hoping she would find herself in a SF/Fantasy related show so we'd have an excuse to invite her to Starcon or Starfest. Good luck, Denise! Shannon Doherty is rumored to have left Charmed due to personal problems with her co-star Alyssa Milano. |

Witchblade
Starts June 12Here, in the summer doldrums, we find a slight glimmer of hope for our dimly lit TVs. A new show, a new female heroine - and perhaps hope. Based on the successful comic book series, Witchblade is the story of a police detective that finds an ancient weapon that transforms her into a formidable weapon. There is the requisite bad guys that know more about the weapon than she does, but as an interesting twist, her sidekick and mentor is her dead police partner. You might want to catch the June 12th show on TNT. The series could end up just a Summer '01 thing if it doesn't grab some viewers. I'm sure it wouldn't even exist if Dark Angel wasn't getting noticed - but any genre show deserves a chance - especially since it's one of the only new things on TV this summer. |
