El CantanteEl Cantante Quiz Contest
Screening on Tuesday, July 31st @ 7:00pm
Century Aurora 16 - 14300 E Alameda Ave.

The movie celebrates the life and music of the legendary Puerto Rican salsa singer Hector Lavoe, a pioneer of the sound and sensibility that redefined Latin music in the 1960's and 1970's.

Directed by Leon Ichaso, the film is a labor of love for its stars, Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez, who are both New Yorkers of Puerto Rican descent. Shepherded to the screen and produced by Lopez, El Cantante portrays an era when a new sense of national identiy and pride took root in Puerto rican communities across the U.S. Hector Lavoe's music was both a sountrack to and affirmation of that awakening, and that music courses joyfully through El Cantante.

Talk To MeTalk To Me Quiz/Contest
Thursday, July 26th @ 7:00pm
Continental Theater, I-25 & Hampden

Academy Award nominee Don Cheadle portrays the one and only Ralph Waldo “Petey” Greene Jr. in TALK TO ME. Petey’s story is funny, dramatic, inspiring – and real.

In the mid-to-late 1960s, in Washington, D.C., vibrant soul music and exploding social consciousness were combining to unique and powerful effect. It was the place and time for Petey to fully express himself – sometimes to outrageous effect – and “tell it like it is.” With the support of his irrepressible and tempestuous girlfriend Vernell Watson, the newly minted ex-con talks his way into an on-air radio gig. He forges a friendship and a partnership with fellow prison inmate Milo’s brother Dewey Hughes.

From the first wild morning on the air, Petey relies on the more straight-laced Dewey to run interference at WOL-AM, where Dewey is the program director. At the station, Petey becomes an iconic radio personality, surpassing even the established popularity of his fellow disc jockeys, Nighthawk and Sunny Jim. Combining biting humor with social commentary, Petey openly courts controversy for station owner E.G. Sonderling.

This film is rated R. You must be at least 17 years old to play for tickets.

My Best FriendMy Best Friend Quiz Contest
Screening on Tuesday, July 24th @ 7:30pm
The Esquire Theater, 6th & Downing

François is a middle-aged antique dealer. He has a stylish apartment and a fabulous life, but at a dinner with a group he considers his dearest acquaintances, he is blindsided by the revelation that none of them actually likes him. He’s arrogant, self-centered and harsh, and they don’t believe he knows the meaning of friendship. His business partner Catherine makes him a bet: if he can produce his best friend, she will let him keep the massive Greek vase he acquired that afternoon on the company tab. If not, it’s hers.

Having accepted the wager, François naively tears through his address book, trying to shoehorn an increasingly unlikely series of contacts into the all-important role. Moving through Paris, he keeps encountering a trivia-spouting, big-hearted cabbie named Bruno. Bruno’s chatty, lowbrow ways grate against François’s designer temperament, but he covets the other man’s easy way with people. He convinces Bruno to teach him how to make friends and sets about learning the “three S’s” – being sociable, smiling and sincere – though they don’t come easy. Ultimately, François victory will depend on Bruno's naiveté in playing along, but what's the cost of cheating at friendship?

In the annals of history’s great escapes there is no other story like that of Dieter Dengler, the only American to ever break out of a POW camp in the impenetrable Laotian jungle.  After months plotting his getaway from a harrowing prison and a death-defying journey through some of the world’s fiercest wilderness, Dengler appeared at his first press conference looking like a dashing movie star and showing neither sentimentality nor bitterness – simply an indomitable will to survive that allowed him to triumph against impossible odds.

Now, from legendary director Werner Herzog (“Grizzly Man,” “Fitzcarraldo”) and starring acclaimed actor Christian Bale (“Batman Begins,” “The Prestige”) comes the incredible true story of a man who, from the depths of total darkness, blazed his own willful path to freedom.  A blistering action-adventure and a stark epic of survival, RESCUE DAWN reveals how Dieter Dengler relied on the most primal qualities of evasion, endurance, tenacity and courage to find his way home.
