Instant Win Screening on GOFOBO

It's the summer of 1987, and James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg), an uptight recent college grad, can't wait to embark on his dream tour of Europe.  But when his parents (Wendie Malick and Jack Gilpin) announce they can no longer subsidize his trip, James has little choice but to take a lowly job at a local amusement park. Forget about German beer, world-famous museums and cute French girls—James' summer will now be populated by belligerent dads, stuffed pandas, and screaming kids high on cotton candy.  Lucky for James, what should have been his worst summer ever turns into quite an adventure as he discovers love in the most unlikely place with his captivating co-worker Em (Kristen Stewart), and learns to loosen up.

This movie is rated R. You will need to be at least 17 years of age to reserve tickets for this movie.

Alien Trespass ScreeningAlien Trespass Screening
Thursday, April 2 at 7:30PM in Denver - Blizzard Makeup Screening

To download two admit one passes, just visit gofobo.com/rsvp and enter the RSVP Code FILM7191. Supplies are limited and awarded on a first-come, first serve basis.

Alien Trespass is a thrilling sci-fi adventure from three-time Golden Globe winner and five time Emmy Award-nominated director/producer R.W. Goodwin (The X-Files) and brought to you in glorious color! The movie is an exciting and entertaining homage to the great science-fiction movies of the 1950s, the post-war boom period when the country was filled with great hope and prosperity and, at the same time, lived under the threat of nuclear annihilation.

The story begins in 1957 in the star-filled skies above California's Mojave Desert. It is a special night for noted astronomer Ted Lewis (Eric McCormack), who is preparing a special dinner for his beautiful, adoring wife Lana (Jody Thompson) to celebrate their wedding anniversary. In another part of town, Tammy (Jenni Baird), a waitress at the small local diner with big plans for the future, looks out her window and is excited to see a shooting star, which she takes as a good sign for her dreams.

But what Dr. Lewis and Tammy assume is a shooting star, is really an alien spaceship. The fiery ball hurtles toward earth and crash-lands on a butte in the desert. The only witnesses are Dick (Andrew Dunbar) and Penny (Sarah Smyth) who are necking in a nearby lovers' lane.

A tall, metallic alien named Urp emerges from the craft unharmed, alarmed to discover that the monstrous Ghota, who was also on board, has escaped. The menacing one-eyed creature's unquenchable appetite could mean the end of civilization as we know it.

Urp is the only one who knows how to stop the hideous extra-terrestrial, but to do so he has to take over the body of Dr. Lewis and enlist the aid of Tammy, the only human in town willing to believe and trust in his mission. The local police - including police Chief Dawson (Dan Lauria) and officer Vernon (Robert Patrick) - are confirmed skeptics and offer little help. Together, Urp and Tammy must hunt down the Ghota and neutralize it before it consumes all the local inhabitants and uses the human fuel to multiply and conquer the world!

Fast and the Furious ScreeningRay Harryhausen Tribute
Hosted by Kevin Atkins, our Master of Ceremonies
Saturday morning documentary narrated by Leonard Nimoy and
Sunday morning screening of The Seven Voyages of Sinbad

"Ray Harryhausen was born on June 29, 1920 in Los Angeles, California. Today he is considered a true inspiration to an incalculable number of special effects artists, directors and producers. The likes of Joe Dante, James Cameron, Peter Jackson, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg all hail him as having changed the face of fantastic film-making. And it doesn’t begin and end there. Many other followers of fantasy art pay tribute to him, as well as many others who have simply fallen in love with his creatures, worlds and stories."

"To the delight of cinema audiences the world over, Ray Harryhausen has made dinosaurs walk the earth, horses fly, statues come to life, apes play chess, and skeletons fight.  Harryhausen calls his work “kinetic sculpture”; it is a method of stop-motion filmmaking that has made him a cult figure in the world of cinema."

"Ray Harryhausen stands alongside Willis O'Brien as one of the greatest stop-motion animators creating fantastic films that have amazed audiences since he began his work. Few film-makers have inspired the awe and admiration of an audience as Ray Harryhausen has. His films contains visual images that are burned into the minds of everyone who has seen them. One has only to mention the skeleton battles in either The 7th Voyage of Sinbad or Jason and the Argonauts and you can visualize the scene in you mind. It is this power that has made Ray Harryhausen something of a cult figure and in a world sadly in need of heroes like Jason and Sinbad, Mr. Harryhausen's films remain a beacon to a brighter time when heroes were truly good and villains were truly evil."

Do a quick Google search for the name “Ray Harryhausen” and you’ll find a myriad of sites devoted to the man and his films. The three paragraphs above are just a few examples of the love and praise for this warm and unassuming man who turns 89 years young this year!

In an age of CGI, where vast armies of technicians labor on computer-generated special effects, Harryhausen’s films are revered for their ingenuity, the handicraft of a single, gifted artist. Considered an auteur and true visionary, he was honored by the Academy Awards in 1992, receiving the Gordon Sawyer award for a lifetime of technical achievement. His films have experienced a resurgence of interest, as new generations of fans flock to greet him at conventions, purchase his DVD’s, and collect model kits based on his creations.

Starfest MC Kevin Atkins invites you to spend time with him on Saturday and Sunday as he presents  an illustrated look at the man and his movies.

On Saturday morning in Main Events Kevin will present  The Ray Harryhausen Chronicles narrated by Leonard Nimoy. This 1997 documentary of Ray’s life and works includes appearances by Ray Bradberry, Dennis Muren and George Lucas. All of Ray’s films are covered from Mighty Joe Young through Clash of the Titans. You’ll also get a rare look at his early work a well. After the film we’ll take a look at some of Ray’s “Lost Projects” and what he’s up to today.

On Sunday in Main Events you’re invited to view The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. Ray’s first full color production celebrated it’s 50th anniversary last year! Kevin will introduce the film afterwards will present a look at the production of the special effects.

Aristomenis Tsirbas "Mini" StarFest GuestStarship Troopers
Wednesday, April 1st $5 Flashback Feature
Continental Theater, I-25 & Hampden @ 9pm

Bugs, glorious bugs! Starship Troopers is a movie that works on so many levels. It's based on the classic science fiction novel by Robert Heinlein. Like so many great SF stories, it examines moral issues under the guise of action and adventure.

When the world is attacked by a great faceless enemy, high school student Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien StarFest 1999) and his friends are enticed into military service through slick propaganda ads. Soon they realize that war is really just a gory and painful conflict of kill or be killed. In one of the film's great climatic battles with the bugs, Paul Verhoeven, the film's director, uses cutting edge computer animation and blood to pit Michael Ironside against a numberless army of scary insect-like bugs bent on destroying humanity.

The film also stars Clancy Brown (StarFest 1997) who appears in the 2nd greatest role of his illustrious career as the tough Sgt. Zim.

Come and join us on Wednesday night at 9pm to watch this great science fiction epic on the Continental's fabulous 3-story screen. Tickets are just $5 each. The Continental is conveniently located at I-25 & Hampden in Denver. Starship Troopers is rated R for graphic sci-fi violence, gore, some language and nudity.

Be sure to take a look at the complete list of Wednesday night Flashback screenings at the Continental. Next week's feature stars Brent Spiner in Star Trek Generations and the following week, April 15th, we'll present the cult classic Serenity.

Ari Lehman HorrorFest 2009 Guest

Ari Lehman Joins HorrorFest Cast
The First Jason Voorhees

A native New Yorker, Ari grew up in Westport, CT, where he trained in classical music and jazz piano. Recognized at an early age for his musical abilities, Ari was presented with an award for pianistic excellence and a scholarship to Berklee School of Music by jazz great, Dr. Billy Taylor. Also actively engaged in performance and theatre, Ari snuck into an audition for a new movie, Manny's Orphan's, directed by Sean S. Cunnngham. This role led to Ari getting the call for Friday the 13th - and the rest is history.

Ari returned to New York City where he studied jazz piano in its breeding ground with Joanne Brackeen and enrolled in NYU studying big band orchestration and jazz piano with Jim McNeely and Vladmir Shafranov.

A seasoned recording artist and professional musician, Ari already received acclaim with his world rock and reggae band, Ari Ben Moses Band, when upon moving to Chicago in late 2002, he (after long laying quiet about his 1980 role) was "discovered" by horror fans who actively sought his attention.

In response to their enthusiasm, Ari drew upon 20 years of experience as a professional musician and recording artist and created First Jason specifically for Horror Fans, especially the fans of Jason Voorhees and Friday the 13th.

First Jason has performed in clubs, festivals, and conventions throughout the Chicago area. The engaging showmanship and superior musicianship have consistently received enthusiastic response and have developed a strong following.

Ari Lehman has appeared in E!, Entertainment Weekly, Blender Magazine, Chicago Reader, Illinois Entertainer, and signings nationwide. In November 2005, he was the first Jason Voorhees to visit Hamburg, Germany. In 2006, he appeared at Collectormania G-Mex in Manchester, England.

Ari Lehman and his wife Elaine are currently based in Chicago, Illinois. Ari will be attending HorrorFest April 17-19, 2009.

Starfest HorrorFest ComicFest GameFest 2009More Guests Announced For Starfest
Frankly, we are having a hard time
getting them posted quick enough

The guest confirmations are really starting to come in for Starfest, HorrorFest and ComicFest. We'll try to continue to announce them here, but the more complete list will is available on the guest pages linked through the red menu bar for the convention. Make sure you check there in the coming weeks.

We just delivered our latest convention postcard to the mailing company today. We'll be putting together an email blast in the next few days. The general admission tickets for the convention should be available at King Soopers this week and as soon as they are, we'll be getting the tickets out to the local comic book and anime shops for sale there too. We plan to have posters and flyers available very soon and will be advertising ComicFest in some of the Denver area movie theater lobbies this weekend for the opening of Watchmen. If you can help us get the word out, we'll be happy to send you posters and flyers to give to your friends and post at work and school. We can really use your help.

If you feel like you aren't getting your Starfest News quick enough, I'll (Stephen Walker) be happy to take the blame. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with having four conventions to report on. I would suggest that you make sure to watch the Message Board for updates - it can automatically notify you about the topics you are interested in as news develops. Since most of our department heads are moderators, they are online daily to keep you up to date on many of the aspects of the convention.
