Starfleet Academy Extension Courses At Starfest

Now in its sixth year, Starfleet Academy has trained and entertained hundreds of students. The Academy courses give convention attendees an opportunity to become a Starfleet cadet for the weekend. The courses consist of multimedia presentations, audience participation, a little education and a lot of fun. Classes are taught by Andorian Ambassador Indra Ivari, Lt. Commander Stevl and a host of other professors including Vulcans, Andorians, Betazeds, Deltans, and even the occasional human. There are always plenty of surprises, and the courses are updated every year. Everyone is invited to attend one, two or all four classes. Diplomas and other rewards will be given to those who complete all four courses.

2007 Course Schedule

Starfleet History 305: Starfleet and the Immortal Bard – Will Your Starfleet Career be a Comedy, a History, or a Tragedy? Instructor: Professor Victoria Windsor. Through historic videos of previous missions, performances and possibly even hearing Shakespeare in the original Klingon, students will be taught how Shakespeare’s archetypes can help an officer understand and deal with his crew more successfully. Whether the officer is dealing with “the conscience of a king, a “dagger of the mind” or those “whom gods destroy” - all cadets can benefit from this entertaining look at the Bard and Starfleet. This class will include opportunities for students to get on stage and perform for other students. Saturday 10:30am - Main Events.

Life Sciences 103: Life Skills on the Rec Deck – Parody & How to Make Fun of Your Superior Officers and Starfleet in an Appropriate Manner. Instructors: The Rec Deck Team. The Rec Deck Team believes that making fun of your commanding officers, and even Starfleet, can be a healthy exercise and great for morale. According to a recent survey, Captain James T. Kirk and his crew have been an overwhelming favorite as a subject for parody and humor. Students will participate in a variety of forms of parody focusing on the Enterprise, including songs & skits, and will have the opportunity to create their own. Note from the Rec Deck Team: Don’t tell Lt. Commander Stevl about this class. He thinks it’s on parity in Starfleet. You know Vulcans. Saturday 1:30 - Panel Room 3.

Astronomy 101: Earth Solar System – Be a Star, or a Sun or a Planet in a Hands-On Astronomy course. Instructor: Lt. Commander Stevl. Students will begin their exploration of the universe by learning how Earth’s solar system works. When is the full moon visible in the day time? Why is Venus only seen as a crescent? Why is the planetary Grand Tour so rare? And why isn’t Pluto a planet? Discover the answers for yourself as you take the role of the different heavenly bodies in a technique called kinesthetic astronomy. Last one there has to be Uranus! (Note from Stevl: Stop having Rec Deck crew write course descriptions.) Sunday 10am - Panel Room 2.

Engineering 106: Tools for Space Missions – Future Design and Construction Techniques. Instructor: Dr. T’Nea Kelly. This is the class that made Scott, LaForge, O’Brien and even Trip legendary Engineers. If you want to save your ship or station, you have to be prepared to make what you need out of what’s available. Now is your chance to practice this important skill. In this hands-on class, students will have the chance to demonstrate and hone their design and construction techniques in competition with their fellow students. Sunday 2:30pm Panel Rm 3.
