Nick Runge

My professional illustration career started in 2003. I was doing small local things here and there (paintings), in my home town of Fort Collins, CO until I had a chance meeting with Comic book veteran Mike Baron. In August of 2004, Mike had moved to Colorado and had real interest in working on something together. He also had real connections and jobs in the comics industry.

In 2005/2006, after penciling/inking for about a year on various comic strips written by Baron (being published by educational book companies), I penciled/inked five pages of Image Comic’s Detonator #4. A small gig, but a start nevertheless. In 2007 I worked on a graphic novel called Black Ice for comicmix.com (online) and I also illustrated covers for Mike Baron’s Badger. (IDW)

The Badger covers led to an opportunity to work on more IDW material. Starting in late’07/08 I was offered a chance to work on Joss Whedon’s Angel comic book. Starting with a short story in issue #7 of Angel: After the Fall, I worked on the series for three issues (interior pencils). Soon, the chance to do covers for Angel came, and I felt very fortunate to finally have the time (with each piece of art) to put in the amount of detail I’d like. Currently I am working mainly on covers only (IDW). Some titles in 2008 and 2009 have included: Angel, Ghostbusters-The Other Side, Terminator Salvation, Gene Simmon’s Phantasmagoria, Star Trek, Gutwrencher, and Peter David’s Fallen Angel.

Still being a relative newcomer to the comics industry, I feel that there is much to learn, and that I am very lucky to be able to do so around very talented and truly professional people. I hope to spend many, many more wonderful years being involved in the art form I love the most: comic books!
