Denver Star Conventions is celebrating its 40th year of science fiction and pop-culture entertainment. It all started in 1977, the same year that Star Wars hit movie screens. Both events have had a similar trajectory in popularity and staying power. StarFest returns this year to the Marriott and Hilton convention hotels in the Denver Tech Center. Over the last 40 years, a lot of families and friends have been joined together at StarFest. Many three-generation families fly in from all over the country for the three-day event. Some people have found romance at the show and several couples have even staged weddings and marriage renewals at the show. StarFest is a family and friends phenomenon that is unique in the world of pop-culture conventions. Many of the attendees have been coming their entire lives.
StarFest's primary goal is to create a great personal experience for everyone that attends. The multi-track programming offers fun activities and opportunities for people to make new friends and discover hobbies and interests that are meaningful and educational. Attending StarFest is about participation - it's not just a large room full of vendors and autograph lines (although we have them too). People are encouraged to spend the entire weekend together interacting by playing games, building models, learning about space exploration, speaking with film-makers, actors, special effects artists, animators, fight coordinators, authors, illustrators and scientists. There is also programming for specific interests like Star Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, horror, table gaming, Klingon Kulture, film production, writing, comic book creation and art illustration. Additionally, there are actor appearances, autograph sessions, photo sessions, costume contests, talent shows, shopping, model displays and fan club presentations.
Guests attending StarFest 2017 include: Ming-Na Wen – Malinda May of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Christian Kane – Jake Stone of The Librarians, Walter Koenig – Chekov of Star Trek, Rene Auberjonois – Odo of Star Trek: DS9, Hale Appleman – Eliott of The Magicians, Jodelle Ferland – Five of Dark Matter, and Mike Quinn – Nien Numb of Star Wars. Directors include Russell Emanuel (Occupants) and Mark Steven Grove (Star Raiders: The Adventures of Saber Raine), who will be presenting their movies along with live commentary.
StarFest is a sort of a mothership for a bunch of smaller conventions that take place within the big show. The smaller conventions include: ComicFest, HorrorFest, GameFest and ScienceFest.
ComicFest features its own Dealers Room and guests like Steven E Gordon, an American film director, character designer and animator; Pat Broderick, a Marvel and DC comic artist; Mike Baron, the creator of Nexus and Badger; Barry McClain Jr, who is a comics illustrator published in Valiant, BlueJuice, Atrophy and Burning Spear comics; and our ComicFest 2017 Artists of the Year: Artem Shukaev and Joe Oliver.
GameFest is our table games convention run by Petries Family Games and features game play with table-game creators who will be introducing their latest creations. Game creators at GameFest include Sean Brown of Mr. B games; Mike Fitzgerald of Diamonds and Baseball Highlights 2045; Rob Heinsoo of Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards and 4th Edition D&D; Lukas Litzsinger of Fantasy Flight Games and Star Wars: Destiny; Suzanne Sheldon of Dice Tower; Jeff Arbough of SpyGlass Games; Keith Avallone of PLAAY.com; and Michael Knight of SpyGlass Games.
HorrorFest is our horror convention that caters to horror fans and film students. Events include sessions by podcast hosts and ghost debunkers Bryan and Baxter and a screening of the film The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde with the actors Jed Rowen, Gianni Capaldi and David Beatty who will be joined by the film’s Executive Producer Steve Pisa. There will also be lots of horror authors and a charity auction with donated movie props and collectibles to benefit My Quiet Cave.
For this year's ScienceFest we've gathered together space scientists, astronomers, a cosmologist and a science writer for six info-packed talks and a future-looking panel discussion with NASA scientists Dr. Kenneth G. Carpenter and Steve Bailey.
Come celebrate 40 years of StarFest living long and prospering!
